The mobile crane industry will be impacted by the implementation of OSHA standard 29 CFR 1926.1427. The introduction of this OSHA standard will have a significant influence on the mobile crane industry.

Do crane operators have to be certified?

According to the OSHA Standard (1926.1427(a)), Mobile Crane Operators who operate cranes with a capacity exceeding 2,000 lbs. in construction settings must either hold certification from an accredited crane operator testing organization, such as All-Purpose Crane Training, or qualify through participation in an audited employer program.

OSHA's Crane Operator Training Standard

After the publication of the final rule in the Federal Register on November 9, 2018, regarding the eligibility of crane operators, OSHA has provided further clarification and guidance regarding the effective dates of its requirements for crane operator eligibility.

There are two significant dates that require attention:

1. February 7, 2019: Crane operators are required to obtain a license, which should be issued by an accredited certifying organization like AP Crane Training. The certification must be specific to the type of crane being operated.

2. February 7, 2019: Companies need to evaluate their crane operators using specific criteria and a thorough assessment process.

Effective date: The final rule will take effect on December 10, 2018, with the exception of the amendments to 29 CFR 1926.1427(a) and (f) (regarding evaluation and documentation requirements), which will become effective on February 7, 2019.
